What to Do if You’re Arrested

In addition to calling your criminal lawyer as soon as possible, the most important thing to do if you’re arrested is to act in a respectful manner toward law enforcement officers. Although being arrested is a tense situation, it’s critical to remain calm and be polite. As your criminal lawyer can inform you, cops can make your life much more difficult if they feel they’re being disrespected. And while it may seem contradictory when you’re trying to be polite, it’s also important to avoid answering most questions. Cooperate with the police by providing your basic information, such as your full name. However, inform the officers that you do not intend to answer any questions regarding the incident until your criminal attorney is present.

The same rule about being respectful applies after you’ve been placed in a holding cell. Try to keep your distance from other people, yet avoid looking scared. It’s usually best to avoid talking to your cellmates unless they initiate a conversation. Additionally, as your criminal lawyer serving La Plata is likely to advise you, avoid discussing the incident for which you’ve been arrested with your cellmates.
