Consumers Have Rights When Products Cause Harm

ProductL_

People across the country experience serious injuries every day as a result of unsafe products that are on the market. Tragically, many suffer in silence, unaware that they have the right to seek compensation from negligent parties. These funds can be used to address medical costs, lost present and future wages, and so much more. The courts have found that when companies produce defective products for whatever reason, or when they fail to warn consumers of potential risks, they can be liable for the aftermath.

Examples of Product Liability

There are myriad examples of companies having to pay up after their products caused harm to innocent consumers:

  1. Following the suffocation deaths of more than 100 infants while using the Fisher Price Rock n’ Play Sleeper, the company settled out of court for $19 million and recalled the units.
  2. Ford Motor Co. was ordered to pay out over $2 billion after the roof of a truck collapsed in a rollover crash.
  3. A jury found Tesla liable for $200 million in damages after the company refused to settle a $60 million case based on a fatal collision related to the Autopilot function,
  4. Peloton forked out $19 million because it neglected to recall dangerous treadmills after multiple accidents and injuries. The accounts of entrapment of children, pets, and adults included injuries such as broken bones, abrasions, lacerations, and even the death of one child. The company was forced to take financial accountability thanks to several lawsuits.
  5. Takata airbags with faulty inflators deployed in accidents, launching bits of shrapnel into passengers. Injuries and fatalities kept climbing, finally leading the company to pay out over $1 billion.
  6. The plaintiff in a case against Johnson & Johnson was awarded $1.56 billion after suing based on a claim that using the company’s baby powder–which contained asbestos in the talc–caused cancer.
  7. Under the parent company Bayer, Monsanto settled a class action case related to Roundup usage that caused cancer in  hundreds of thousands of people.  The company will now be forking over $7.25 billion in damages.
  8. Lithium batteries have been involved in multiple fires and explosions related to consumer devices such as e-bikes, vape pens, laptops, cell phones, cordless power tools, and more. When named After Metro Site, an electric vehicle factory, improperly stored batteries and caused a fire, they were sued and settled on a $31 million payout.
