Dealing with Debt Following a Divorce

After you get divorced, you may have significant debt due to legal fees, debts incurred during marriage (even those only attributed to one partner), and alimony or child support. This video will discuss some of the ways a spouse may be held liable for another spouse’s debt and some solutions to avoid problems in this area.

Couples who share joint accounts should have them closed or frozen before a divorce is finalized so that each partner may maintain his or her credit score. If your partner has outstanding debts, you will want to speak with your divorce attorney about including a clause that relieves you of responsibility if your ex-spouse defaults on the debt.
